MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction)
Alliance Integrative Medicine is pleased to offer a mindfulness-based stress reduction course facilitated by Richard Sears, PsyD, MBA, ABPP, a board-certified clinical psychologist.
Why should you do this?
Mindfulness involves learning to pay attention to and wisely work with our thoughts, bodily sensations, and emotions. The practice is learned through simple meditation exercises, which will bring a richer awareness and presence into your daily life. MBSR reduces ruminating thoughts, helping to prevent stress, anxiety, and relapses of depression. The training groups are modeled after the pioneering work of Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life and director of the renowned Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
MBSR at Alliance Integrative Medicine
The MBSR program at Alliance Integrative Medicine consists of education, discussion, practice of mindfulness meditation, and light stretching exercises. In addition to the eight weekly sessions, you will be asked to do 45 minutes of “homework” each day.
Over the eight weeks of the program, the stress-reduction practices you will learn will help you:
- Become familiar with the workings of your mind.
- Notice when you are at risk of getting caught in old habits of mind that re-activate downward mood or stress spirals.
- Explore ways of releasing yourself from those old habits and, if you choose, enter a different way of being.
- Put you in touch with a different way of knowing yourself and the world.
- Notice small beauties and pleasures in the world around you instead of living in your head.
- Be kind to yourself, instead of wishing things were different all the time, or driving yourself to meet impossible goals.
- Find a way to stop battling with yourself all the time.
- Accept yourself as you are, rather than judging yourself all the time.

Who Can Participate?
Anyone with a desire to reduce stress and to develop more conscious living habits is invited to participate. We ask you to make a commitment to attend all eight sessions and to do about 45 minutes of practice each day. Health care and business professionals are invited to learn these skills to be more effective in their daily work, and to help facilitate work-life balance.
Although mindfulness is often used in therapy, our MBSR classes are educational and experiential, designed to teach you important principles. You are not required to disclose any personal information in the group.
